Know Your Dress Code

You can often tell a lot about the dress code of the party and how fancy the event or celebration is going to be by the details and overall look of the invitation.  A formal invitation will look elegant, traditional, classy or ‘chic’ and may even explicitly indicate a formal event by its description.  Just like a crossword puzzle, the dress code of a party is in the spirit of the invitation.

To give you an idea, a single card or folded card with a small photo or cartoon image would be appropriate for a bridal shower, baby shower, bachelorette party, birthday party, family reunion or other similar and generally informal events.  Depending on the location of the event, an appropriate outfit would be a pretty summer dress or casual dress if it is at a home or held during the day, a cocktail dress, little black dress, ruffle dress, bubble dress or other party dresses if this event is an evening out at a club, restaurant, or hall.  For an informal backyard BBQ party a simple e-invite or online invitation may be sufficient and a short dress, spring or summer dress, casual dress, sweater dress, shirt dress, or a cute floral dress and cardigan will be.  To these events a formal ball gown or evening dress would not be appropriate and the invitation would never suggest that you get that dressed up.

On the other hand, a formal or semi-formal event would likely send out an invitation that has been professionally designed and printed, use a cursive or more formal font style and colour (no lime greens for instance), and be written in proper English with full names, including middle names, if the celebration is in someone’s honour.  If you are confused about the dress code and the invitation does not stipulate that the event is “white tie” or “black tie” then your next clues are the time and the place.  Often times, a party that begins once the sun has set or after 6pm will be more formal.  If the location of the gala event takes place in an upscale part of town or in a well-to-do home, then we would recommend you dress up in your best evening gown.

If you are still not sure then ask around!
